The September Round Up
Challenge

Last month we saved our change. This month we're investing it. Here's why the swipe matters as much as the coin. 🤎

In August, our challenge was simple — every $1 bill and every coin that came through our hands got saved. No spending it. Just setting it aside, all month long. It worked, and it proved something we already believed — small, consistent amounts add up faster than they feel like they will.

September is the next step. The September Round Up Challenge takes that same exact concept — the money we don't think twice about — and applies it to how most of us actually spend now: by card, not cash. 🤎

Same Concept, Different Swipe

Here's the idea. Every purchase you make this month, round up to the nearest dollar. That leftover amount — the 47 cents, the 82 cents, the 15 cents — gets set aside and invested instead of spent.

💳 How It Works in Real Life
Coffee — $4.65 Round up to $5 — invest 35¢
Groceries — $52.20 Round up to $53 — invest 80¢
Gas — $38.10 Round up to $39 — invest 90¢

It's the same principle as August — money we overlook, put to work — but this time it happens every time we swipe a card instead of only when cash lands in our hands. 🤎

Why We're Doing This — Saving vs. Investing

We want to save for a rainy day. That's not going anywhere — emergency funds and sinking funds still matter, and they always will. But saving alone isn't the whole plan.

We want to invest, so we don't have to work until we're 90 years old. We want to build something that eventually works for us — money that grows on its own, so one day our income doesn't depend entirely on showing up to a job. That's the real goal behind this challenge. It's not just about the spare change. It's about building the habit of investing consistently, starting now, so it feels normal by the time the amounts get bigger. 🤎

"We don't want to just save for a rainy day. We want to invest so we don't have to work until we're 90."

The Psychology of Starting Small

Here's something worth understanding about why a challenge like this actually works — and it has nothing to do with the dollar amount.

When a goal feels too big, most people never start at all. "Invest for retirement" is overwhelming. "Invest 47 cents from your coffee" is not. The brain doesn't resist small numbers the way it resists big ones — which means small numbers are actually the fastest way to build a habit that eventually handles big numbers with ease.

This is the same reason the August cash jar worked. Nobody feels stressed setting aside a dollar bill. But do that enough times, consistently, and two things happen — the money adds up, and just as importantly, the behavior becomes automatic. You stop having to decide to do it. It just becomes what you do.

That's the real goal of the round up challenge. It's not really about the amount of money you end September with. It's about proving to yourself that investing can be a habit — not a big scary decision you make once a year, but something that happens quietly, in the background, every single time you spend. Once that habit exists at 47 cents, it's a lot easier to grow it to $5, then $50, then a real percentage of every paycheck. 🤎

🤎 The Real Win

You are not trying to get rich off round ups. You are training yourself to treat investing like something automatic and normal — the same way August trained us to treat saving that way. Small now. Bigger later. That's the whole strategy.

How to Actually Do It

No printable needed for this one — just a decision every time you spend. Round up to the nearest dollar, and manually move that difference into an investing account at the end of the day or the week, whatever's realistic for you. The exact amount matters far less than doing it consistently for the full month. 🤎
