You're Not the Same Person
Who Set Those Goals.

Ten months ago you made a plan. Since then, life happened, and so did you. Here's how to re-evaluate your 2026 goals honestly, without guilt. 🤎

By Moe  ·  Paper By Moe

Back in January, you sat down and wrote your goals for 2026. You were hopeful, motivated, and maybe a little ambitious. You made that list as the person you were then, with the information you had then, in the life you were living then.

Now it's October. Ten months have passed. Maybe your income changed. Maybe your priorities shifted. Maybe something happened that nobody could have planned for. Maybe you simply woke up one day and realized a goal on your list doesn't excite you anymore. 🤎

All of that is allowed. Changing your mind is not the same as quitting. Re-evaluating a goal is not the same as failing at it. It's what happens when you keep living, and keep growing, after you wrote the list.

"The goal-setter in January didn't know what the person in October would know. Let the October version of you have a say."

Why Re-Evaluating Is a Strength, Not a Setback

Most of us treat our yearly goals like a contract we signed with ourselves. If we don't finish every single one, we feel like we broke it. So we either push through goals we no longer care about, just to say we did, or we quietly avoid the list altogether until December and feel bad about it.

Neither one helps you. A goal you've outgrown will drain your energy. A goal you're avoiding will drain your confidence. The healthiest move you can make with 90 days left is to look at the list honestly and sort it. 🤎

Sort Every Goal Into One of Three Buckets

Pull out your 2026 goal list and put each goal into one of these three buckets:

✅
Bucket 1: Finish It
Still matters, and still doable by December

These are the goals you still genuinely want, and you're close enough that a focused push over the next 90 days can get you across the line. Don't overthink these. Write down exactly what has to happen, and when.

🔄
Bucket 2: Adjust It
Still matters, but the original target no longer fits

Maybe your income changed, or an expense you didn't expect took a bite out of your plan. You still want the goal, but the number or the timeline needs to flex. Move it, shrink it, or split it into smaller pieces. A smaller goal you finish is worth more than a bigger one you abandon.

🕊️
Bucket 3: Release It
You've changed, and this one no longer belongs on your list

This is the hardest bucket, and often the most freeing. If a goal no longer reflects what you want, you are allowed to take it off the list. You're not giving up. You're being honest about who you are now.

Releasing a goal opens up the time, money, and energy you were spending on guilt, and lets you aim it at something that actually matters to you today.

Questions to Ask About Each Goal

🤎 Ask Yourself
1Do I still want this, or do I just feel like I'm supposed to want it?
2What has changed since January: my income, my expenses, my responsibilities, my priorities?
3How much of this goal is actually left to do?
4If I could only finish three goals by December 31st, which three would I pick?
5If I let this one go, do I feel relief or regret? Pay attention to the first answer.

Do the Math on What's Still Possible

For the goals in your "Finish It" and "Adjust It" buckets, don't guess. Do the math. With roughly 10 weeks left in the year, a goal that felt impossible in your head can look a lot more manageable on paper. 🤎

📐 Example: Finishing a Savings Goal
Goal: save $1,000 for an emergency fund
Saved so far$400
Still needed$600
Weeks left in the yearabout 10
Needed per week$60
$60 a week is about $120 per biweekly paycheck. Seen that way, the goal is either clearly doable, or clearly a candidate for adjusting.
🤎 The Quick Test

Take the amount you still need, divide it by the weeks left, and ask: could I honestly find that number every week? If yes, finish it. If it feels like a stretch, adjust the target. If it feels like dread, that's useful information too.

Carry the Lessons Into 2027

Here's the part most people miss: the goals you adjust and the goals you release aren't wasted. They're data. They tell you what you actually value, what pace you can actually sustain, and what you should plan differently next year.

That's exactly why the last 90 days are so powerful. Instead of waiting for January and starting from zero, you can use October, November, and December to test what works, practice the habits you want, and walk into 2027 already in motion. 🤎

Ten months ago you made a plan with the information you had. Today you have more information, more experience, and a clearer idea of who you are. Use it. Keep what still fits, adjust what needs to flex, and let go of what doesn't belong anymore. That's not abandoning your goals. That's growing up alongside them. 🤎
